ANOTHER SUCCESS WITH DIGICEL’S DIGIGAMES
Special needs athletes in Tonga had their own Olympics during DigiGames
Digicel Tonga Ltd, in collaboration with the Tonga Red Cross, Ministry of Sports, TASA and Tonga
National Paralympics committee, are delighted to have hosted the second annual Digi games at ‘Atele Indoor Stadium on Saturday 5th December.
The Digi Games in association with The Tongan Red Cross is a special Olympic Games competition that caters exclusively for children and adults with special needs. There was a huge turnout with over 350 participating athletes from, Alonga (shelter for elders with special needs), ‘Ofa Tui mo e ‘Amanaki (school for kids with special needs), Hearing Impaired, and the Psychiatric ward at Vaiola Hospital.
The events started with a parade led by the Tonga College Brass band, who volunteered to provide entertaining numbers throughout the day. Honorable Frederica Lupe’uluiva Fatafehi ‘o Lapaha
Opened the games and Rev Siaosi Kava from the Tokaikolo’ia Kalaisi officered a word of prayer and Mr Viliami Tufui (President – Tonga National Paralympics Committee) delivered the keynote address to officially opened DigiGames 2009.
Athletes with the help of volunteers and over 30 Digicel staff participated in 8 different fun games. All atheletes and spectators were treated to a full BBQ meal after all their strenuous activities and cheering , which was cooked and served by the Digicel Team.
The games were full of fun and laughter all day and concluded with a prize giving ceremony for all the successful atheletes.

DigiGames is part of Digicel’s DigiCare program that provides support to various community activities in Tonga. The program has already supplied a free DigiTV subscription to the Alonga and OTA centers, a Free internet connection of DigiNET and DigiTV to Mango Tree Center.
